3 Engine Problems You Should Always Fix at Your VW Dealer

Damaged Head GasketVolkswagen Repair | Silver Spring, MD

The head gasket is one of the essential seals in your engine. It forms a perfect seal between your engine cylinders and the engine block. The seal prevents the mixing of oil, coolant, and engine gases as they pass between the engine block and the cylinders. Each of these three is essential, but if they are allowed to mix, this will cause damage to your engine.

Engine gases from combustion, for example, could leak into the coolant. If this happens, they’ll increase your engine temperature, which can overheat. Coolant leaking into the engine oil will remove the oil’s ability to lubricate engine parts. Coolant is also part water, and its presence will cause rust in your engine. Oil leaks into the combustion chamber could damage the catalytic converter. Blue exhaust smoke means oil is leaking into the combustion chamber.

Stalling Problems

If your engine stalls, this could result in an accident. Your engine will suddenly stop, and it may take time to restart. If you’re on the highway when this happens, there’s a risk of another vehicle colliding with you. Several reasons your engine could stall include a dying alternator and worn or damaged spark plugs.

Your alternator provides the power for your spark plugs. A failing alternator produces less power for the electrical system than your car needs. If the alternator is weak enough, it may lose the ability to supply power to the spark plugs, and they won’t fire. The spark plugs can also wear out, or a fuel-rich environment in your engine could damage them.

Thumping From the Engine

Thumping noises suggest something is loose and moving around. If the noise comes from your engine, the most common reason is a problem with the engine mount. The engine mount is the part of your car that holds the engine in place, and these noises suggest the engine is moving as you drive. To work correctly, your engine must be in a stable, immovable position.

Two possible causes of the noise are an oil leak from the liquid-filled engine mount or rubber seals separating from the mount. The rubber seals help to keep the mount firmly in place. Our technicians will check the mount for damage. If we find any problem, we can repair it.
