Damaged Starter Motor
The starter motor initiates the crank that physically starts your engine. This process is initiated when the solenoid in the starter motor receives an electrical charge from your battery. Like all other components, a starter motor gets older and can fail. If the starter motor doesn’t work, your engine won’t start even with a jump start.
An easy way to test if the starter motor is the problem is to listen for a slight click when you press the button or turn the key. If you hear a click, the starter is working and has received a charge. In this case, your starter motor could be fine, but it’s not receiving enough power to crank the engine. Our technicians will test the starter to find the cause of the problem.
Worn Battery
As we’ve seen, the battery provides the electrical power to start your engine. It also supplies power to all your VW’s electrical systems when the engine is switched off. A battery has a useful life of three to five years; then, it needs replacement. As a battery ages, it loses its ability to hold a charge, and its charging ability also decreases.
We advise you to get a battery checkup after three years and then at yearly intervals. We attach your battery to our testing machine and subject the battery to a variety of tests. These tests will assess its strength and capabilities. The tests will also highlight any possible problems with the battery. If the results suggest your battery is wearing out, we can install a new one for you.
Damaged Spark Plugs
Spark plugs provide the electrical charge necessary for combustion. When the fuel-air mix enters a cylinder, it is rapidly, highly compressed, and ignited. The plugs require large amounts of air to ignite the mixture. Any problem that reduces the air in your engine can result in a misfire and damage to the plugs. A high percentage of fuel in the fuel-air mix can also damage the plugs.
If your engine has a high fuel-to-air ratio, excessive fuel will make sparking difficult. The fuel vapors will damage the plugs by coating them in sticky black carbon. We can check the plugs and clean or replace any damaged ones.
